Hi, I’m Karim Iliya. I am a photographer, filmmaker, whale swimming guide, and I run the ocean conservation nonprofit Kogia. I’m looking for a video and photo editor who can sort through photos and footage and create short films, photo stories, social media reels, carousels, and stringouts. I am hiring for a long term role and I hope to find someone who can work closely with me as part of my team.

*Occasionally there are time sensitive projects where we need to move quickly to sort and edit photos and video. For example, if a new volcano erupts, we may need to produce edits while the moment is still fresh.

What Kind of person I am looking for

I’m looking for a talented video and photo editor who is fast, efficient, detail oriented, creative, and able to communicate clearly. Someone who enjoys working with large amounts of raw material and can turn it into something beautiful and meaningful.

Primary Role - Video and Photo Editor

Photo

  • Edit in Adobe Lightroom

  • Sort large batches of images efficiently

  • Rate, select, and build strong story driven photo sets

  • Create clean edits including color correction, cropping, shadows, and highlights

  • Select and prepare images for social media, web, articles, and magazines

  • Build cohesive sets that tell a clear story, for example reducing thousands of images into a strong final selection

  • Match my visual style and keep edits natural

  • No Photoshop required

You should be able to:

Video

  • Edit in DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut, or Adobe Premiere

  • Sort through large archives and find the strongest clips quickly

  • Color correct and color grade

  • Build stringouts for clients, licensing, and social media

  • Create short edits such as thirty second or one minute videos with music and basic sound design

  • Prepare individual clips for social media

  • Edit in a range of styles including fast paced and slower cinematic art pieces

  • Create showreels, highlight videos, and short artistic pieces

Secondary Role (Iceland based/Optional)

Description

  • Film behind the scenes for youtube

  • 2nd shooter / camera operator

  • Assist on shoots in Iceland and occasionally internationally

About my work

I spend much of my time documenting the natural world, from the lives of whales to volcanoes, arctic landscapes, and different cultures and ways of life. I photograph and film on land, underwater, and using drones to tell the story of life on our planet. I also run an ocean safari company Dance with Whale and a non-profit called Kogia. GOAL

My goal is to spend more time out in the field taking photos and videos and to get that work out into the world. I no longer have the time or bandwidth to sort and edit everything, and thousands of images and videos end up sitting on hard drives unseen and hidden from the world.

THE DREAM

My dream is to be at the very top of my industry in photography and filmmaking, to work with National Geographic and the BBC, and to tell powerful stories with images that are seen around the world. I want to document the world in a way that creates real impact and helps shape how people see the planet. I want to reach a level where I can approach, and be approached by, any brand or organization. I hope to build strong partnerships that allow me to bring different ideas, dreams, and opportunities to life. I am excited about creating big projects around the world and here in Iceland, telling stories that people do not often get to see. I am building a small team to help make these goals possible.
